Behind the Menu is an installation created by photographer Maren Caruso that spotlights talented immigrant chefs: Daol Tofu, La Guerrera’s Kitchen, and El Menú de Lupita (Lupita’s Menu).

Daol Tofu & Korean BBQ was established in 2017 by Sunny Bae with the goal of delivering high quality, authentic Korean Cuisine to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Sunny named the restaurant Daol with the expectation of all the blessings that come when you work hard and faithfully follow your dream.

Sunny takes deep pride in making high-quality, authentic, and healthy Korean dishes, and treating staff and customers like family.

Visit her restaurant in Oakland for a family-oriented environment where you can relax, and enjoy delicious Korean cuisine with your friends, family, and loved ones.

El Menú de Lupita (Lupita’s Menu) is a cooking channel created by Lupita González-Perez. Growing up in Mexico City and Hidalgo, Lupita was surrounded by women dedicated to feeding their large families with meals that ranged from the simplest recipes to dishes that could compete with the best in the world.

On her channel, Lupita shares easy, simple, and affordable recipes, both for those who are new to cooking and those who, like her, have loved cooking for many years.

Lupita dedicates Lupita’s Menu to the great legacy her grandmother, mother, and aunts left her; the love of cooking and their incredibly delicious recipes. She is also grateful to her husband and children, who always supported her on her quest to demonstrate the gastronomic wealth of her homeland.

La Guerrera’s Kitchen is a passionate mother-daughter team specializing in tamales, pozole, and barbacoa – all made from traditional family recipes from their native Guerrero, Mexico.

The business was born out of La Cocina’s Kitchen Incubator program and aims to bring together community to inspire connection and conversation.

With humble beginnings in the mercados of Guerrero, LA Guerrera’s Kitchen has been selling delicious tamales across the Bay Area since 2002 and they now have their own restaurant located in Swan’s Market in Old Oakland.
