A year in review, and a year to look forward to.

With my first year as Immigrants Rising’s Executive Director wrapping up last month, I reflect with pride on the lessons and growth this past year has brought me. I am proud of the strides that we, as an organization and a part of a much larger community, have taken to advance our mission of ensuring that individuals can thrive, regardless of their immigration status.

One of the key takeaways from this year has been the importance of trust and collaboration.

Over the past year, I witnessed every team member of Immigrants Rising use their drive, dedication, and passion for this work to overcome challenges together, celebrate wins with one another, and push the boundaries of what we can achieve for the undocumented community: from fiercely advocating for all California higher education systems to sign the AB 540 FAQ, to resolutely granting $1.68 million in SEED and career funds to undocumented entrepreneurs and professionals, to enthusiastically supporting 1,347 program participants, to selecting new Board members that represent our undocumented community. Internally, we’ve been able to align our efforts, work more cohesively, and ensure that everyone understands the context behind our decisions. This collective understanding will strengthen our resolve to further define our leadership structure while also encouraging leadership at every level of the organization. Our transition into our own 501(c)(3) in just a few months is also a testament to our collective commitment and resilience.

The political landscape is shifting, and our role within the immigrant rights movement continues to evolve. It is clear that to tackle the layered issues affecting undocumented people today, we must work hand-in-hand with our partners, community members, and allies, especially in the advocacy space. Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to deepen our partnerships and expand knowledge and support for our work. I am confident that stepping into this new chapter of Immigrants Rising — our increasing independence and continued collaborations — will enable us to further our impact on the immigrant rights movement.

Being in the immigrant movement, the personal is political and the work is demanding, but by being in community, we can further our mission and vision of an America where all people can pursue an education and career confidently and without constraint.

I am deeply optimistic about what the future holds for Immigrants Rising. With our organization’s collective talent, passion, and drive, we can continue making a significant impact. I am excited about the work that lies ahead and am confident that, together, we will continue to rise.

With much gratitude,

Iliana G. Perez, Ph.D.
