DACA recipients, facing long waits for renewal, risk losing their jobs
Published May 30, 2024.
In LA Times article, Andrea Castillo highlights how USCIS’ delays in processing DACA renewals have negatively affected DACA recipients’ livelihoods. Featured in this story are Miguel, a previous Wellness Support Group participant, long-time community member, and sustainability and inclusion manager, and Edvin Dapcevic, a sales team executive. Delays in renewal processing, despite filing five months in advance (such as Edvin’s case) or two months to avoid losing “any leftover time remaining under the old permit” (such as Miguel’s case), force DACA recipients to take leave from work or worse, lose their jobs altogether. While the DACA program provides work authorization and a protective status, its impermanence leaves its beneficiaries to “live [their] life two years at a time.”
