Immigrants Rising Denounces the U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision To Allow Blanketed Discriminatory Immigration Detention Tactics

September 9, 2025 (Los Angeles) — Yesterday, the Supreme Court of the United States lifted a lower district court order issued in July 2025 and re-enabled immigration officials to use discriminatory and racist tactics to carry out the administration’s unscrupulous immigration agenda. This ruling criminalizes community members on the basis of skin color, spoken language, and occupation, and was decided under the radar through its shadow docket with limited briefing and public engagement. This ruling is not only unjust, but it’s a green light for racial profiling and abuse that affects everyone, including U.S. citizens.

California is home to 10.6 million immigrants, 1.8 million of whom are undocumented, with 66 percent of undocumented immigrants having lived here for 10 or more years. The unconscionable decision clears the path for already-marginalized communities of color to be even further terrorized by secret police solely for their appearance and existence in specific spaces and contexts, especially ones frequented by working-class community members. This harms individual lives and entire communities across Los Angeles and beyond.

While this decision is a direct attack on the progress made toward immigrant and racial justice, the fight is not over. Justice will prevail. On September 24, the federal district court will hear arguments to determine if a preliminary injunction should be issued based on additional evidence of this administration’s enforcement tactics, which would put a stop to the implementation of this ruling. In the meantime, this egregious decision by the nation’s supreme court doesn’t go unchallenged: a committed and unified coalition of individuals, advocates, leaders, and organizations stands ready to fight for and protect all impacted communities. Immigrants Rising stands with all those affected by this recent court decision and will continue to support community members. We urge you to utilize the following resources:

In addition to developing and distributing legal and mental health resources, protecting our community members also requires state and local policy interventions that uphold and fortify the rights of all community members, including undocumented immigrants. That is why we call on state policymakers to be resolute in defending the immigrant community by passing and enacting policies like:

A court decision like this requires our community and allies to stand in solidarity more than ever before. This is the time to be bold, fearless, and courageous—let us protect our communities, immigrants, and citizens alike.
