Immigrants Rising Responds to Federal Attempts To Limit Immigrants’ Access to Financial Systems They Contribute to & Make Possible
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (May 27, 2026) — The Trump administration is once again attempting to exclude immigrants from the economy. After an unsuccessful attempt to establish a data-sharing agreement between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the federal administration is now trying to push immigrants out through an Executive Order that pressures banks to treat a customer’s immigration status as a factor in evaluating financial risk.
This Executive Order follows reports that the administration is also exploring ways to change the ITIN process to allow for distinguishing between citizenship status, further escalating attacks on immigrant communities’ privacy and economic security. These are outright discriminatory and desperate moves, yet again, from the administration, designed to intimidate and isolate immigrant communities. We will not stand for it.
“Undocumented immigrants are central to our economy. Each year, undocumented immigrants in California contribute $8.5 billion in taxes; nationally, they contribute over $96 billion. The administration has already barred non-citizen immigrant taxpayers from accessing tax credit benefits and federal small-business loans. And after failing to violate data privacy laws through a data-sharing agreement between the IRS and DHS, the federal administration is now looking at other ways to hurt immigrants’ ability to participate in our economy. But make no mistake: justice will prevail again. Immigrants Rising is working with immigrant and economic justice partners to defend and uphold immigrants’ longstanding ability to access basic financial services and economic opportunities,” said Iliana Perez, Ph.D., Executive Director of Immigrants Rising.
