SACRAMENTO, Calif. (January 9, 2026) — Undocumented immigrants are deeply embedded in California’s communities, representing over 5% of the state’s population. Now, more than ever, California must stand with immigrants and ensure that the 2026-27 state budget reflects a commitment to immigrant social and economic prosperity.

Immigrants Rising is grateful to see that the Governor’s proposal includes historic investments in educational opportunities like dual enrollment and implementation support for the Master Plan for Career Education. At the same time, we cannot lose sight of the immediate need to address the threats that California’s immigrants are facing. As more immigrants lose their work authorization and many more face uncertainty about the future, it is essential for California’s budget to proactively invest in immigrants’ ability to thrive in every aspect of life.

“At a time when the federal administration is attacking human rights and thwarting opportunities to thrive, the 2026-27 California state budget must serve as an antidote to such actions and inactions, even in a difficult budget landscape. The volatility of revenues and federal immigration policy is exactly why we must ensure that the state budget lays the foundation for long-term social and economic security of all Californians, especially undocumented Californians who are facing new threats every day,” said Dr. Iliana Perez, Executive Director of Immigrants Rising.
